Helping Jay secure a new career following medical discharge

Jay served as a Royal Marine for 12 years. Sadly, in 2019 Jay suffered a shoulder injury that left him facing medical discharge from the Corps.

“I was in a position where differing medical opinions meant that until the Med Board convened, I was unsure if my career within the Corps would continue or end. In the end, the decision was made that I would be discharged. This meant I had three months to prepare myself and find another job and career. To be honest, it was a very daunting prospect and I did not know where to turn. I have a wife and four children to provide for.”

Jay reached out to the Charity for help.

“I spoke the RM Charity and immediately the reassurance and assistance that I received was overwhelming. It gave me great personal confidence that all was not lost.

The Charity was able to assist Jay by offering advice on how to prepare a CV and covering letter. The charity then advised Jay on the companies he should approach for work. All of this helped Jay understand his transferable skills.

“From here I was able to gain employment and valuable experience from the civilian sector. All was going well then the COVID crisis struck and I was made redundant. Behind the scenes, the Charity jumped into action again. They made it clear that I was a high priority due to my situation and I was given lots of support, contacted daily with updates and recommendations for employment.

The Charity offered Jay emergency funding to help him through until he found alternative employment.

“Thankfully, I got a job with good money in in the final hour. I therefore I did not need emergency funding.
